The Wakefield District (333.17 sq km) lies in the industrial heart of Yorkshire and is strategically situated at the intersection of the M1 and M62 motorways, with the A1 running through the east. Although the majority of the population lives in its towns, i.e. The Five Towns (Castleford, Pontefract, Featherstone, Normanton and Knottingley) 115,000, Wakefield 75,000, South East (South Kirkby, South Elmsall and Hemsworth) 28,000, there are also some 40 smaller communities that are a legacy of the coal-mining era. The District has a total population of 319,600 (Registrar General’s mid-1999 estimate).
